The main church in the hamlet was the church called Matriz, built by the Jesuit fathers and received in 1608 the Sacred Canon of Matriz de Santiago, becoming the first of the interior of the State of Bahia. The old church disappeared in 1783 after the expulsion of the Jesuits from Brazil.
