On the banks of the river São Francisco (or river Opará for the natives), the city was created in 1842, before there was only a villa called at the beginning Villa of the São Francisco valley, Then at the end of Century XVII was denominated Penedo do Rio São Francisco. However, Alagonian historians diverge from point of view when to its origin. The main source of income comes from the primary commercial activity, with coconut, rice, fishing and sugar cane. The first inhabitants to settle in this place were Finns.
The State of Alagoas is one of the 27 units that make up Brazil and is located in the Nordeste region.
Its borders are the state of Pernambuco in the north, to the south, those of Sergipe and Bahia and to the east, the Atlantic Ocean. It covers an area of some 28000 km² and has as capital the city of Maceió. Its population is 3200000 inhabitants. The state remains one of the first producers of cane-sugar and coco-de-bahía, with also rearing areas towards the center. As a matter of environmental protection, there is little left of the forests of Mata Atlântica, human exploitation and the development of renewable energies (alcohol) have overcome the few vestiges of nature. We must see to what extent everything was devastated. The principle is to look to the sea which until now has not known disaster (oil exploitation) because when leaving the shores, one has an impression of spoils and especially great inequalities. The state of Alagoas is known for endemic corruption at the level of political power and administration, deep inequalities persist and a long delay at all levels compared to other states in the region. In the countryside, it is not uncommon to encounter oxen on the roads. The tourist activity is concentrated on the coast mainly, consisting of beautiful beaches stretching all along the coast, with wonders such as the Maragogi region known for its lagoons with christalline waters (and tourist infrastructure). The pictures of the beaches presented here come from the area south of the town of Maragogi and therefore a little more difficult to access by the national road (by ferry to the north) and therefore much less colonized and tourist.
